Page 12 Wednesday, July 25, 2012 The Adams County Record BY ANITA VANGRUNSVEN The reorganized Republican Party for Adams County is now Viki Purdy, Chairman and New Meadows Precinct; Anita VanGrunsven, North Council Precinct; Jeff Howard, Council Precinct; Dave Veselka, Indian Valley Precinct. Our convention delegates are Terry Jones, State Committee Man; Shirley Halsey, State Committee Woman; Steve Joslin, State Committee Youth; and Shastina Joslin, Alternate. Robin James is Vice Chairman and Christy Wilson is Secretary/ Treasurer. That is quite a team! You will cheer when you hear about the Platform and Resolutions that were adopted at the Republican Convention this June 21-23 in Idaho Falls. Our Republican candidates will be running on principles and issues that resonate well here in Adams County. Our delegates to the Convention returned so enthusiastic! Here are some highlights: Viki Purdy was especially pleased with the election of Barry Peterson from Elmore County to the Idaho Republican Chairmanship. She thinks he will lead the party along a conservative path in the years to come. Steve and Shastina Joslin were glad to see many planks in the platform that reflect their concerns about the direction our nation has been taking. As long time Ron Paul supporters, they were pleased to see that a strong statement in support of auditing the Federal Reserve was approved by the whole Idaho State Convention. Shirley Halsey noticed that many counties were awarded a special "5 Points" plaque for activities during the year. She also noted that Adams County lacked a "Lincoln Days" event for an award. She thinks we need to do this! Shirley was also impressed by the emphasis on honesty and transparency in the selection of delegates to the convention. The main business of the Convention was the adoption of a Platform and passage of many Resolutions. From the Preamble to the Platform--just so you can get the flavor of the whole document--here are 4 of the 11 opening statements: "WE RE REPUBLICANS BECAUSE: "We believe the strength of our nation lies with our faith and reliance on God our Creator, the individual, and the family, and that each person's dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored:' "We believe the United States Constitution is the greatest and most .inspired document to govern a nation, and the republican form of government it gives us is the best guarantor of freedom in history:' "We believe government must practice fiscal responsibility, and that taxpayers should allow the government only the money necessary to provide appropriate functions." "We believe that the rights of individuals can only be maintained by exercising personal responsibility for behavior:' The rest of them are WOW, too! The Platform that follows the Preamble is inspiring to read. The first Article is on "Responsibility of Government" and includes detailed sections on Fiscal Responsibility, Taxation, Reform of Congress, and Sound Currency among others. There are Articles on "Education "Agriculture "Energy","Private Property Rights" and many other topics. Should you have occasion to write to your Republican representative--on the local, state, or federal level--reference to the statements in this Platform would buttress your position. The whole Preamble plus the Platform is 13 pages long. I will leave a copy at the Record and they will give one to you for the cost of making a copy. Please look for them in their new location at 108 Illinois. Resolutions that passed included ones recommending that the we "Abolish the Federal Department of Education" and "Abolish the Department of Energy." Both resolutions were based on the obvious failure of these departments to make progress in their assigned missions and were considered as prime places to reduce the size and cost of the Federal Government. Two related Resolutions were also endorsed--one to '~Abolish the EPA and Replace with Scaled- Down Version" and one proposed by our own Monte Pearce to "oppose the designation of additional wildernesses in Idaho and support the establishment of a sunset law on Recommended Wilderness Areas." The longest was Resolution #16 since it was chock full of all kinds of lawyer lingo with two pages of "Whereas" clauses. This Resolution is a recitation of all the wrongs and potential dangers of Section 1021 of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act, spelled out in detail and great specificity. The final "Therefore be it resolved that all elected officials, at all levels of the State of Idaho, condemn [it] in no uncertain terms" passed! Now we, the citizens of Idaho, have the backing of our majority Republican party in opposition to this pernicious law--and this condemnation should be endorsed by all our Republican candidates with a pledge of continued non-enforcement should they be elected. Light may be dawning in Idaho! Sure glad I live here. For more information on Idaho Republican state-wide activities please go to IDGOP.org. Your local Republican party is planning to hold some public events to raise awareness of these issues and build support for our candidates. Someone will try to get federal and state candidates to come talk to us at the Council Mountain Music Festival. Steve ]oslin may organize a Republican BBQ for some time in September. Someone may throw a "Lincoln Day" party as another opportunity to get acquainted with our officials and let us acquaint them with issues here in Adams County, plus perhaps qualify us for that state award Shirley Halsey found out about. If you would like to be involved in the local Republican Party and/ or help with any of our projects, please contact one of the folks named in the first paragraph. Of course, stay tuned for the announcements of our events as the dates get closer.
