q-he Adams County-Record Editor's Notebook Wednesday, August 15, 2012 Page 7 The Silly Season Once in a while something happens that reminds me of my favorite quip, modified from Churchill's quote about democracy: "Humans are the dumbest species on the planet, except for all the rest." In case you haven't noticed, we are entering the silly season, also known as election season. I came to the conclusion years ago that most people believe what they want to, and they do not want to be distracted by the facts. (Modern brain science and psychological studies confirm this. See The Righteous Mind by lohathan Haidt.) And in an age where you can find someone supporting just about any point of view on the Internet, we can easily screen out any contradictory evidence and cling to our preconceived notions if we want to. I regularly get wacky emails from friends about one political outrage or another. The most recent contained an auathentic- looking copy of Obama's Kenyan birth certificate. A few seconds of Googling found the origin of this nonsense. An Australian man digitally altered his own birth certificate as a joke, then somebody Spread the hoax around the world as fact. It's hard to believe anyone still believes the Affordable Care Act dictates death panels. I got an email long ago about these death panels, and it had a link to the bill itself and the supposed wording about death panels. When I followed the link and read that part of the bill, it was so plainly not anything to do with death panels that it was ridiculots. People not only screen out things they don't agree with, they twist and distort things to make them fit what they want to believe. I recently got a phone call from the NRA telling me how Obama and the UN were going to take all my guns away with a new arms agreement. So I spent a few minutes on line and discovered the arms agreement has absolutely nothing to do with restricting the legal sale or ownership of guns within the U.S. This, someday, maybe, future agreement would only apply to illicit international trade of weapons. An arms agreement text hasn't even been agreed upon yet, but a proposed draft (that has so far been rejected) is available on line here: http://www.snopes. com/politics/info/att.pdf Last week I received a guest opinion article by Senator Jim Risch, part of which addressed the same UN gun issue in which he said: "Recently, the committee conducted a number of hearings on consideration is how so even if such a treaty the U.N. Convention they seek to subject U.S. were to pass, U.S. rights of the Law of the Sea laws and citizens not to would still apply. But ff we really care about the truth, we can be aware of our hard- wired tendency to cling to our unsupported, rationalized views, and at least make an effort to compensate.
