The Adams County Record Wednesday, August 15, 2012 Page 13 Heartland Riders Drill Team And an Opportunity for You! BY ANITA VANGRI/NSVIN Did you see our newly formed Heartland Riders Drill Team, with only a few practice sessions, pull off a pretty good Grand Entry at the Council Rodeo to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner? Wasn't that amazing and didn't it look like fun? For many of us ladies, it was the first time we had ever ridden a horse in an arena. How could we even imagine to attempt it? Well, first our Captain, Toni Burnett, figured out a fairly simple pattern. Then we practiced riding the pattern. Next we introduced flapping flags, carefully, to the horses by riding circles around Toni and Brittany Crigler while they held their flags sitting very still on their calm, well-trained horses. With more exercises, and in less time than one might think, our horses were agreeable to having those big things flapping over their backs and around their heads! What a thrill it was to practice our pattern with the American flags waving so proudly as we cantered around the arena! But for the nights of the performances at the Council Rodeo, please add loud speakers with blaring music, stands full of cheering people, pens with bulls slamming about, and strange horses all around. Great Fear and Trepidation was experienced by several of us before we entered the arena but our horses did fine and, in the end, we all survived! What a feeling of triumph that we did it! Fear was overcome and fun, but this time we confidence was gained, plan to have enough How would you like to practice sessions that ride like this? Wouldn't we can be a little more it be fun? You now have precise in the drill a chance to join us right maneuvers. here in Council! Because We are having of Toni BurneR's expert a Brain-Storming/ coaching, we had such Planning meeting a good time that we (without horses) on ladies are thinking about Thursday evening, continuing with a drill August 23 at 8:30 pm team. This is planned to at the practice arena be a "multi-generational" at the Adams County effort, so if you have Fairgrounds. Why kids or grandmothers to don't you come and bring along, that would see if this is something add to the enjoyment of that would stretch the whole group. If your your horsemanship horse (like mine) is not and tickle your fancy? trained up to the level We plan to have lots of that is necessary to do the fun on horseback!
