Page 18 Wednesday, September 19, 2012 The Adams County Record This photo is a little different that recent ones, in that it isn't way out in the mountains someplace. Most of our readers, even the oldest of them, have seen this view (more or less). The main building in the picture has been there for about 100 years. The winner of this week's photo location wins an autographed copy of a new book, The Legend of Council Mountain by Stephen Mehen. Get your answers in by 4:00 PM On Monday: 253-6961 or record@ ctcweb.net. Last week's pictures showed Black Lake and the Summit Mine tunnel that sits on the mountainside south (and slightly west) of the lake. The mine was started at least by 1901, as that's the year a gravity operated tramway was built to carry gold ore from the Summit Mine to an ore-processing mill below the lake. The total length of the tramway covered the three quarters of a mile between the mine and the mill. The unsupported span over the lake was 1,500 feet, and was thought to have been the longest single span in the world at that time. I neglected to list Dave Addington as one of the people with a correct answer' last week. Dave seems to know where just about every picture featured here was taken. We received four correct answers for the Black Lake photo: Bill Daniels, Garrett Knight, Loren Thomas and Dave Addington, and the winner of the drawing was Loren Thomas. Loren wins his choice of a jar of pickled ]alapeno peppers or a spray bottle both from D&L Herbs of of herbal insect repellent Council.
