q-he Adams County Record Wednesday, October 24, 2012 Lakey's Cafe wins Food Merit Award BY LAURIE BOSTON Southwest District Health (SWDH) announced the Food Merit Award W'mner from Adams County is Lakey's Car6 in Indian Valley. In recognition of National Food Safety Education Month in September, SWDH announced ten Food Merit Award Vfmners from Southwest Idaho for calendar year 2011. Each food establishment was presented with a plaque to display in their facility. The ten winners were chosen from 1289 inspected food establishments within Southwest Idaho. This is the third time Lakey's has won this award, and the fifth time it has been nominated. The restaurant was chosen from 51 food establishments in Adams County. Brundage Mountain Cafeteria and Granite Mountain Caf6 in New Meadows were also nominated for the award. Other winners include Gem In and Out, Caldwell; Imelda's Restaurant, Caldwell; Burger King, Nampa; TGI Friday's, Nampa; Apple Lucy's Restaurant, Parma; Taco Bell Express, Emmett; Idaho Pizza Company, Fruitland; Homestead Caf6, Weiser; and the Whitehouse Drive-In, Marsing. Since 1999, SWDH has presented annual merit awards to recognize those in the restaurant and foodservice industry whose owners and managers are committed to clean and safe food handling practices in reducing risk factors that may contribute to food poisoning in their daily activities. "These food establishments are committed to proper food handling and are judged on reducing incidents time, use of clean equipment, and using approved food items; said David Loper, Director of Environmental Health for SWDH. Julie Harvey, owner and operator of Lakey's Caf6, was raised in the caf6 business. Lakey's Caf6 was first opened in 1958 in Caldwell, Idaho by Harvey's grandparents. Her parents opened a Lakey's Caf6 in 1965 in Cambridge, then in 1987 purchased and re-modeled the current location in Indian Valley. Harvey and her husband purchased the restaurant in 1992. Harvey credits making customers feel at home and like they are part of the family as key to the restaurant's success. She also stresses how important it is to pay extra attention to safe preparation. "This award reassures my employees all the extra Page 3 attention they pay to how things are served and prepared is important;' she said. Every food establishment operating in the six-county area of Southwest Idaho is inspected yearly for food safety and sanitation by Environmental Health Specialists from the health district. The inspection includes three phases: food protection, food handlers, and equipment and facilities. All food establishment inspections are unannounced except pre-opening inspections.
