Page 6 Wednesday, January 6, 2016 > Chamber of Commerce Continued from page depends on the natural resources available, the abilifji to produce goods and 4 services, and the purchasing of goods and services within an economic area. All add to the ability to bring money into an area, or to" keep the money circulating producing a multiplying effect. We, the citizens of Adams County, have little control of our economic system. Washington DC controls our natural resources; the ownership of the few factors of production are mostly located outside our economic area, and we tend to spend our money online, or down below sending our wealth to other areas. I have participated in many conversations where we solved the world’s problems, but after downing that last cup of coffee, we leave, and nothing is'. done. Chamber’s of Commerce in America were born from the needs of the Great Depression. Citizens joined with Business Leaders to improve the economic conditions of their community. They didn't look for a hand out; they worked to create the ability to improve their economic futures. We can do the same. The Council Chamber of Commerce is looking for your ideas, your assistance in creating solutions, and your financial help to fund them. Join us at the Legion Hall on January 8th, at 6:00 PM, and tell your friends, and neighbors to come, and share your and their ideas. We are anxious to hear from you, ‘ and‘to assist you with your concerns by organizing to help Council become great again. If you do want to add your voice, you can join us at that time. You don’t have to own a business; a concerned citizen can join as an individual for $15 per year. The many, each giving a little, can create much! Iim Mahon is the 2016 President of the Council Chamber of Commerce ~ spring > Water bills Continued from page switching the way water use was calculated, from measuring cubic feet of water to a straightforward ~ measuring of the actual gallons used through each of the new meters. 7A problem occurred when the existing water rates which had been calculated based on cubic feet of water were not updated for calculating bills using the actual gallons used through the meter. If your water billing was for more than 29,920 gallons in the December billing cycle (which was the minimum gallons for the past four months) you will have an erroneous billing amount this month. City Clerk, Tami Testa, discovered the billing error and is correcting the accounts for those who had used 'more than the 29,290 minimum during the four month period. Customers will receive a corrected billing which has the gallon rate applied to? their billing. The new metering system‘allows the city to prepare timely billings each month, and gives water customers a better reading on their actual usage, even during the winter months. After this initial glitch, the correction will make the bills easier to understand and will help to eliminate problems the city had in the past when water leaks had happened during the winter months that could only be detected in the spring, which had resulted in custOmer unable-to pay for leaking systems. Providing and maintaining a municipal water and sewer system is a big job, and one that will have a quirk or two from time to time. The city staff caught and fixed the problem this time, and future billings should be correct. using the new system from now on out. A New Year calls for upgrades on your current services! Being the kill-joys that such authorities can be, they decided there must be a leak in a city waterline. 'And so-the word was spread throughout the kingdom that aid was needed. Four lads of good standing stepped forward. City Clerk Mac Qualls flagged traffic while City Councilman Brad Steiner, city employees Doug Buys and Leonard Wallace brought the city backhoe to the scene and started digging...well, scratching actually. The ground was frozen into something resembling concrete. Steiner figured if a weed The Adams County Record City Council Member Brad Steiner heats the street. A weed burner had to be used to thaw the frozen-hard ground so it could be excavated. a ’3” split from which water gushed. While the damaged section of pipe burner would kill weeds, —— including a 20—year—old it might thaw frozen ground...and it did, but very slowly.Notonly did the job require digging through pavement, but there was also a road base that seemed to contain concrete, all frozen into a barrier designed to defeat any attempt to disturb it. A few hours of .backhoe, jack hammer and shovel work later, the hole reached the errant pipe, revealing connector that looked like a rust-encrusted blob dredged up from the Titanic — another pipe union about two inches away started spitting icy water at the boys. Oh well, two repairs for the price of one hole. After the repairs were competed, the hole was filled, but no asphalt will be put over the spot until‘ next spring or summer. Mac Qualls estimates the cost of overtime, holiday pay, materials, etc. will add up to $5,000 or'more. Only one customer was affected by this service main break. The boys would like to thank Darcy from Granite Mountain for the Hot Chocolate, Patty Steiner for the hot coffee, Chrystal Roff for the sandwiches, Council Member Brad Steiner for the extra help, Bear Loper & Chase Albright for the bobcat operations, Meadow Creek POA for the use of a jack hammer. $79 New Patient Special!
