Charles Skiles of Council
was killed when a huge
boulder “fell over a cliff and
crushed” him in the cab of
a bulldozer he was operating
in an open pit mine, near
Cuprum. “Mr. Skiles had lived
in Council with his wife and

Catholic Church history
“The only Catholic
Church in Adams County
was dedicated June 19 to
the honor and patronage
of St. Jude the Apostle.
The first Catholic family in
Council, about 1909, was
the William Freehafers. In
1914 the Emery Kecklers
moved to Mesa and then
to Council. Mass was
offered in their homes for
many years. The priest
would come from Weiser
or Payette on Monday
mornings after serving
their parishes on Sundays?
“In 1963 Father John
Koelsch, the present pastor,
started coming to Council
from McCall twice a
month. Arrangements
were made to have Mass
in the Council Valley
Grange hall. The number
attending increased to 85
each Sunday. An Altar
Society was formed in
September, 1964, Mrs.
Robert Wood being its
first president?

Work begins in Goose Creek area
Work has begun
on the Goose Creek
Road, with logging
operations to follow
soon. Travel on the
Goose Creek Grade
will soon be, once
again, hindered by
construction.

Goose Creek Road
Due to heavy traffic

Goose Lake (Brundage
Mt.) road, and logging
equipment and logging
trucks in Bear Basin,
the McCall Ranger
District is asking
Monday—Thursday, forest visitors to use

Friday. ,Traffic on
Goose Creek Grade
will be reduced to
one alternating lane
with temporary traffic
signals. The road will
caution while traveling
and recreating in the
area.
The Brundage Bear
Basin logging project
is set to start on
Monday, May 23rd
and the reconstruction
of the Goose Lake
(Brundage Mt.) road
has begun this week.
"The result will be a
fair amount of heavy
equipment operating
in the area," said
Lisa Klinger, McCall
District Ranger.
The Brundage Bear
Basin logging project
is expected to last
approximately a month
— through June. The
road reconstruction
will be an on-going
project through the
summer months and
into the fall.

The
logging
majority of
equipment
and logging truck
activity. will be in
the Bear Basin area
near the Goose Lake
Road, and throughout
the road system that
feeds the Goose Lake
Road. All logging is
being conducted using
skyline equipment.
Additionally, the
tree and brush
clearing operation
for the Goose Lake
road project will add
logging truck traffic
to the construction
traffic.
“The Forest remains
open to visitors,” said
Klinger, “We just
want the public to be
well aware and use
an extra amount of
caution while in the
area.” Visitors that
have questions about
the operations are
encouraged to stop
by the McCall Ranger
District office, ,before
heading into the area,
or call the office at
