W ashington, D.C.- The new
Food stamp program nearing
passage today in the House
is a ,"giant step backward
from Food Stamp reform."
Congressman Steve Symms
said.
Symms, R-Idaho, said the
Agricultural Act of 1977,
which includes the Food
Stamp program has been
reformed to end widespread
abuses reported in the past"
Symms said, "the few
safeguards that existed have
been eliminated."
"Despite claims that the
program has been reformed
to end widespread abuses
reported in the past,"
Symms said, "the few ufe-
guards that existed have
been eliminated."
Symms said the purchase
requirement which required
recipients to pay graduated
amount in exchange for the
stamps has been eliminated
and the stamps will now be
issued free of charge.
"This opens the door in
increased usage of stamps,
more abuse and the progrmn
costa may well reach $10
billion annually soon."
Symme, a member of the
House Agriculture Commit.-
tee, said the bill provided
more welfare, more work
disincentives, and is"a re-
turn to the bread and cir-
cuses of Rome, here in
America."
"I do not want to deny
anyone three meals a day,
but this program is self-
defeating. The bill does
