THE COUNCIL RECORD - PAGE 4 - i Weed Control Last week we talked about show halter training - - how to lead, square up and trot out obediently. The halter showing routine is variable, new ways frequently adop- ted by judges and show committees to improve judg- ing and spectator enjoyment. Some judges will ask you to walk your horse towards him then tro¢ away fron him continuing on the same straight line. Others will ask you to walk away, do a turn on the haunches to the right and trot, back. This is the style generally used in 4-H showing. You will seldom know before the day of the show how the Halter Classes will be run. Therefore you must have your horse thoroughly prepared to lead in a straight line and to perform a good turn in the haunches to the fight. The main purpose of halter showing is to judge the horse's conformation and leg action. If your horse moves at an angle or in a crooked line when walking or trotting before the judge, it will be impossible for him to get a good view without moving around. It is not good etiquette to make the judge work to see your horse. Therefore, straight- ness is highly important. ,After your walk away from the judge, you may be asked to perform a 180 degree turn and return on the same straight line. The horse's right hind foot be- comes the pivotpoint. There should be NO backward movement in a correct turn. This is considered a for- ward movement. The horse .q must not step To teach thi move, stand at the horse's left shoulder in your regular leading posi- tion. Place your right elbow just in front at the shoulder right. Do notget out in front of the horse or over to his fight side. Expect only a step or two the first time and praise him immediately when you get it. At first, don't worry about steps for- ward. Just be sure he's not getting the habit of stepping back. This may take longer to teach than some other lessens but if you take the extra time and patience, You will need it later when proper turn, it will pay off later. Your horse will be stiff and unsupple when you begin teaching this movement. In time, though, he will per- form this smoothly, coming around in one easy move- ment, right on line for the trot back. It would pay to' teach this turn 180 degrees to the left also to make the horse supple on both sides. You will need it later when riding him and performing turns and roll-backs. 4-H judges usually ask the exhibitor to back the horse about 4 steps. Backing in a crooked line will lose you points. Y0u can position the horse's head to, aid backing straight and also to get the horse to move a certain foot to square up. If the horse is backing to the right instead of straight, place his head in that direc- tion. It will force his hind- quarters back to his left. Do the oppceite for a crooked back to his left. Raising his head throws his weight to the rear and aids him to move to a front foot. Placing his head lower throws the weight forward aiding you to move a back foot into better position. Practice will help you beth to communicate with head posi- tioning to move a certain foot in a chosen direction. One must recognize in 4-H halter showing that many horses will have conforma- tion faults that are difficult, if not impossible, to over- come in showing at halter. But in this case the exhibi- tor perf.,manes ¢ae horse to best advantage is being judged, not the horse's conformation as in breed shows. Wednesday, August17, 1977 I-- I as Adams County Weed Control Superintendent attended the annual meet- ing of the Idaho Weed Con- trol Association which was held in McCall on July 13, 14, and 15. On the 13th there was a special meeting composed entirely of county weed superintend- ents from all over the state. After forming our own organization 1 year ago, we decided to have our yearly meetings in conjunction with the Associations annual meeting in order to save on travel costs. At the superintendents meeting we discussed the need of a training seminar that would be limited to superintendents only. It was tenatively set up for the 2nd or 3rd week in August, of this year. The Dow Chemical Company hosted a luncheon and presented a talk on the uses of Tordon. In the afternoon we had an election of officers for the following year and discus- sed the various methods that other counties are using to control weeds. The first morning of the Associations meeting we were given a welcome by McCall mayor, Bill Evans. The program for the day consisted of presentations on Poisonous Plants, Yellowstar Thistle, Herbi- gation, Herbicide Registra- tion, IACA Decontamina- tion Unit, and New Herbi- cides currently being worked on. On Friday the 15th we had a business breakfast at which time it was voted on to elect Lawson Howland, Washington County Com- missioner, to the board of directors for the Idaho Weed Control Association, Lawson will take Merl V there was a panel of Monitored Metered Mixing, Coordinator.
