1977

A careless smoker caused this fire in the beck country.
This kind of fire can be eliminated if those going into the
forests will just show the proper concern.
The Council Ranger Dis-
trict dispatched eight men
and one woman to the Boise
National Forest to fight the
Roberts Gulch Fire last
week.
Those from the Council

Forest Service s p e c i a I
"Disaster has struck the
National Forest s y stem,"
said Joel Frykman, consult-
ing forester and former R-4
T.M. Chief. He cited the
evils of RARE I, c o m-
pounded by RARE H, as
reasons. "if RARE II should
become effective, 91 per cent
of the Challis NF would be
included in roadless and
wilderness type areas," he
said. Mr. Frykman blamed
the situation on President
Carter, Dr. Rupert Cutler,
John Muir, Robert Marshall,
the Sierra Club and the
Communist Party. "T h e
drive for wilderness and
roadless areas on NF lands is
not without many strong
supporters within the U.S.
Forest Service. There are
many on the Salmon and
Challis NF's. They are pro-
bably gullible more than
anything else. To a degree
they are driven to their
orientation by pressure from
the regional and Chief, For-
est people." He urged peo-
ple of Lemhi County to
attend RARE II meetings en
masse" in revulsion against
the activities of the people
agents, who want to make wasteland
, In all there were 200 fire- of these forests rather than
fighters on the fire along productive public proper-
with two helicopters, 4 bull- ties."
Contemporary housing is in, even for the birds!
The use of modern materials in building is not re-
stricted to humans as this example of a well built
bird's nest proves.
Besides mud, which holds it together, the nest was
made of the following; a long strip of plastic, a
plastic can carrier such as are used to package
beer or soft drinks, Christmas-tree tinsel, two pieces
