Drawer 67 Council, Idaho 83612 Phone 208-253-6961 THE COUNCIL RECORD High Cost Of Vandalism Dear Editor, I am writing this letter to set the record straight. In doing so I will use an epithet you so obviously enjoy. It is the "bottom fine." In the third paragraph of the September 14, edition "Editorial -- On the County Budget Hearing," you imply you were unable to hear what was being explained. Fact: I was sitting behind you and I heard all that was said; but then, I was there to listen to the proceedings. In the fourth paragraph of "Editorial -- On the County Budget Hearing," you state other emotions when refer- ences to State laws were made. there, write articles and editorials, but didn't take the time necessary to check and report all the facts. Again "a long standing, and valuable newsp a p e r adage has once again been confirmed and all editors should take heed: Don't print Self-serving h a n d- outs. ' ' Sincerely yours, Robert D. Lawrence EDITOR'S NOTE: The above letter from Mayor Bob Lawrence was Each year thousands of dollars of damage is done to public property in o u r National Forests. C a m p - ground facilities are defaced or destroyed, signs a r e stolen or broken, and build- ings are forceably entered and articles stolen. The replacement or repair of each item is costing you, the taxpayer, a lot of money. You may say, "It's none of my concern," but it is. When you see something that has been vandalized or is being vandalized, remem- ber how many dollars you pay in tax money. Some of these dollars are used to correct the damage you have just seen. You can do some- thing about vandalism and theft without endangering yourself. Collect all informa- tion you can, such as license numbers, vehicle or personal descriptions, location, time of day, and names if possi- ble. Give the information to the nearest Forest Officer, County Sheriff's Department or State Police, and action will be taken to find the individual responsible f o r the damage. If you wonder that you "experienced a presented at the Record what happens then, let's feeling of sadness," and office just 30 minutes before take an incident that hap- deadline. Ten Forest Service r o a d correct. They can be proven if you'd care to test them. In your reference to the Commissioners raise o f $1,300.00 plus," you distor- ted the facts again. In order to come up with your figure, you had to be f i g u r i n g the difference between the 9 month 1977 budg from January 1, 1977 to September 30, 1977 and the new fiscal year begin- ning October 1, 1977 and ending September 30, 1978 which happens to be a 12 month budget. Even at that, there seems to be some wrongcomputations. It strange that way, but romit the whole 1977 budget column of figures when you so carefully worked out the comparisons of budgets in the August 31, issue of The Council Record. Fact: As of the hearing September 6, 1977, the last raise the commissioners will be receiving is $41.66 ver month making a total of $499.92 per year. Also in the August 31 issue of your paper you alleged that the C o u n t y Budget was increasing by an inordinate percentage. To do this you again avoided com- paring the 1978 budget to the 1977 budget, and argued thatt any increase over the a ,t i o n a 1 inflation rate constituted proof of exces- sive spending. Fact: In order to make ( mparisons you should use the correct figures. If you are going to accuse, Mr. Editor, or perhaps you prefer to call it question, don't you think you have a duty to report ALL the facts to the public? In the second paragraph of the September 14, issue "Editorial - - On the Council Meeting," you state "hav- ing no figures from previous years made it a little difficult to analyze." Fact: I had the adopted budget for 1976 and the 9 month budget for January 1, 1977 to September 30, 1977 and the proposed budget for the new fiscal year in front of me and quoted all figures you asked for. Where were your "always neces s a r y, note pads and pens together with the trusty tape recorder and pocket calculator?" So much for the "bottom line." August 23, 1977 carried a letter by a blood--thirsty relative who wants to get rid of a 90 year old person because she is "unwanted". The catch phrase is un- wanted human life. How about mentally and physi- cally handicapped people if they are "unwanted"? who will be next? This is fact, not fantasy. Human fife h a s become If human life in the womb is "unwanted", kill that life! That is the official stance of this formerly Christ i a n nation. Once this principle has been adopted as it was by the Supreme Court, then only circumstances need be altered to come full circle to the killing of "unwanted" minorities or people declared troublesome to society. What can we do to protect our right to life as we grow older? Will you and I one day be counted a m o n g the unwanted and be put to death because we are feeble and unproductive? My right to life comes from God, not from society or government. Go d is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the Lord of Life and Death. Thou shalt not kill applies to the feeble life of the old, the :tentiouE life of the unborn, the life of the totally handicapped and the totally dependent. ALL hu- man life around us is holy, let us respect it. October is called "R e s p e c t L i f e Month".
