The UI entomologist said
many growers in Idaho and
throughout the country are
concerned that a number of
materials such as dimethoate
that have been used success-
fully and safely for many
years will no longer be
available. "If this proposed
cancellation of dimethoate
stands, these people will be
losing a very valuable' tool."
he said.

added.

renaissance, author Clayton
Barbeau said Monday at the
University of Idaho sympo-
sinm on the family in a time
of changing values.
"Not too long ago, it was
fashionable to blame the
family for all of society's ills,
from racism to juvenile
delinquency. Then everyone
began saying that the family
was in decline in this coun-
try," Barbeau told more
than 100 people attending
the final session in a two-day
symposium sponsored by the
university's religious studies
committee with support from
the Association from the
Humanities in Idaho.
"Yet I wonder what they
are using for a comparison,"
said Barbeau, a u t h o r of
"Creative Marriage" and
editor of "The Future of the
the 19th century there was a
very different family pat-
tern," Barbeau said, noting
that wealthy families lived in
a big house along with their
servants, apprentices and
visitors who often stayed for
months. Poor families, in
contrast, lived in one-room
hovels and apprenticed out
their children by the time
they were 10 years old.
"Even 75 years ago, mar-
riages were based on an
economic necessity," Bar-
beau said. The men were
farmers who worked 16 to 17
hours per day six days a
week, and they needed wives
who would preserve food,
take care of the household
chores and bear children
who were also economic
necessities. The women in
turn needed men who were
good providers because
