THE COUNCIL RECORD -- Page 6t- WEDNESDAY. NOV.2.1977
Dr. Judith A. Templeton,
superintendent at the
University of Idaho's South-
west Idaho Research and
Extension Center for the
past two years, has relin-
quished that administrative
assignment to head a new
research project on irrigated
pasture forage.
Dr. Templeton will 'have
the leadership role in plan-
Ring and developing univer-
sity research on irrigated
forage pasture and range in
southwest Idaho. She will
serve as research professor
of animal science, working
within the Department of
Animal Science.
In announcing Dr.
Templeton's new responsi-
bilities, Dr. Auttis M. Mul-
[ins, College of Agriculture
dean, noted that recent
federal funding will make
the new pasture position
possible.
"We have long recognized
a need in Idaho for research
information on irrigated for-
age pastures for dairy, beef
and sheep," he said. "Idaho
has thousands of acres that
can be highly productive,
perhaps most productive, if
managed as irrigated forage
pasture. But we h a v e
unanswered problems of
management, nutrition and
economics and we haven't
had the funds to get a
research program started."
This year, however, fed-
eral emphasis on forage
pasture and range has ear-
marked some funds for such
a program, Mullins said. In
addition, the Idaho legisla-
ture appropriated some
funds for fiscal year 1978 to
enable the Experiment Sta-
tion to plan a forage research
program in southwestern
Idaho. Fiscal 1979 budget
requests include funds to
implement the program.
Mullins said that Dr.
Templeton's previous expe-
rience in animal nutrition
research and her demon-
strated b u d g e t i n g and
organizational abilities made
her a logical choice to head
