The Adams County Record Wednesday, November 2, 2016 Page 13 AFTER READING THE RECENT LETTERS TO THE EDITOR IT BECAME VERY OBVIOUS TO ME THAT"COMMON SENSE" IS A FLOWER THAT DOES NOT GROW IN EVERY CITIZENS GARDEN HERE IN ADAMS COUNTY!?! We are on the eve of electing the titular head of our law enforcement agency who will preside over the safety and law enforcement issues of all citizens for the next four years. Some folks seem to think that this is somehow a popularity contest, basing their decision on what church one attends, who they are related to, what activi- ties they are involved in outside the agency they are managing etc. Folks this does not make any sense, let alone"Common Sense". This is a very important decision, the well-being of your family, your neighbors, and the spiritual health of the entire county depends on it. Frankly as we have come to know it can be a matter of life or death ................ I was pleased to hear the on Nov. 3rd there is going to be a forum where both the incumbent and the challenger will be there to answer questions. I will not be able to attend, but I do have a few questions for both candidates and I thought why not make my questions public, as I think this is a very important election. I am very pro law enforcement, and count as my closet friends several professional law enforcement officers, and family that either past or present are Sheriffs or Chiefs of Police with sterling reputations. I know what a well-run agency should look like and I want ALL the citizens of Adams County to have such department, one they can be proud of and have total trust in. Questions: • For Tom Watts: It is my belief we have a number of first-class deputies and support staff presently employed. Is it your intent to retain these people and how will you work to ensure, they can be all they can be. • For Tom Watts: It will be vital that the sheriff work closely with the commissioners on budget matters. Do you have the knowledge that will be required to handle fiscal matters? • For Sheriff Zollman: I have seen that one of the key items you are listing on your campaign signage is"Competence"Would you agree that when an employer is considering hir- ing someone for an important position, at a minimum they should conduct a back ground investigation and call their previous employers? You have publicly stated you did not know Mr. Woods had been cited for poaching; and his previous employer, former Chief of Police of McCall has stated he received no call from you. Common sense would dictate this was not prudent, reasonable nor competent. Further it would seem, that when, that position includes putting a badge on their chest and gun on their hip, it would become profoundly more critical. Please explain how this and the many red flags on Rolland's past were over looked in the hiring process? • For both candidates; I think all citizens would like to be assured that every citizen in Adams County would be treated fairly, equally and with respect. If in the course of your ad- ministration you learned someone was alleged to have committed a crime; would they be processed per the letter of the law in all cases, even if they are in your employ, a friend or relative. Please respond with your respective points of view. • For both candidates; all officers that complete POST certification take an OATH. In the hiring process you came to know that a given candidate had violated that oath would you still hire them? For Sheriff Zolhoan: Another of your highlighted campaign items is"Integrity when I google the definition of Intogrity, the leading component is honesty. Can you say that in all cases you have been completely honest when answering questions ask of you? When you were ask if the loss of theidaho Power Marine Patrol contract was in anyway related to the Phillips/Wood debade, did you answer tmthfu!ly? . ' For both candidates: I am a huge advocate of pre-hire psychological testing, it is my view that in order to ensure that we hire persons without issues this is a must. What are your respective views on this? • Final Question for both candidates: After reading the complete report on the Yantis inddent, and hearing the AG dearly state he in no way deared the deputies, and that the • incident should have never happened. Common Sense tells me any consideration of rehiring them would have been a no brainer? Both, please give your view point of this. I would like to publicly thank the risk managers of the county's liability carrier for having the COMMON AND GOaD sense to put a stop to any thoughts ofrehiring the said deputies. Paid for by Glen M. Beal, citizen at large. Adopted by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Council POST Council's Code of Ethics Fundamental Duty. As a law enforcement officer, my fundamental duty is to serve the community; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all to liberty, equality and justice.
